Two Iowa educators have been named finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, which recognize kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science. The finalists include Susan Wenger from Valley Elementary School in Elgin, who is a finalist for PAEMST Mathematics, and Brenda Kaufmann from North Tama Elementary School in Traer, who is the district’s STEM coordinator and a finalist for PAEMST Science.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is a prestigious recognition that honors exceptional teaching skills, deep subject knowledge, and the ability to inspire and support student success. Since its establishment in 1983, over 5,200 teachers from all 50 states, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and six U.S. jurisdictions have been honored through this program.

Recipients of the award receive a paid trip to Washington D.C. for recognition events and professional development opportunities, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, and a certificate signed by the President of the United States. The Iowa Department of Education looks forward to announcing the winners later this year, highlighting the dedication and commitment of educators like Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann who serve as role models in their communities and demonstrate the significant impact teachers have on student achievement.
