Improving global health systems to lower maternal and newborn mortality rates

The International Federation of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO) and the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (IJGO) are thrilled to announce the launch of a new publication titled “Global Health Systems Strengthening: FIGO’s Strategic View on Reducing Maternal and Newborn Mortality Worldwide.” This paper, authored by FIGO’s Committee on Health Systems Strengthening and Respectful Care, highlights the critical role that strengthening health systems plays in achieving universal healthcare coverage and reducing maternal and newborn mortality rates globally.

Over the past twenty years, remarkable progress has been made in decreasing maternal deaths worldwide. However, disparities persist, particularly in low-income countries and within disadvantaged groups in high-income countries. The article underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to maternal deaths to develop effective policies and health programs that address the diverse challenges faced by women worldwide.
