Adaptive Sports NW is breaking down barriers and providing inclusive athletic opportunities for the Portland community.

The community-building fundraiser, ‘Get in the Game’, hosted by Adaptive Sports Northwest, took place at Mittleman Community Center in southwest Portland. For over four decades, this organization has been empowering physically and visually impaired individuals to lead active and engaged lives.

The event brought together people from diverse backgrounds to experience the joy of sports and build a sense of community. Athlete Evita Rush shared her inspiring journey, highlighting the shared experiences and camaraderie among participants. The evening featured an array of adaptive sports such as wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, power soccer, pickleball, track events, swimming, and goalball. Participants had the opportunity to try out these sports and discover new ways to stay active.

Executive Director Jen Armbruster, a four-time Paralympic medalist, emphasized the growth of Adaptive Sports Northwest and its positive impact on participants. The organization aims to foster self-confidence, socialization, and independence through connection and inspiration. Athlete Griffin Barlow emphasized the importance of inclusivity and the desire for support and friendship within the community.

Adaptive Sports Northwest offers clinics, practices, and tournaments for individuals of all skill levels. Participant Katie Alford encouraged others to try adaptive sports, emphasizing the profound impact it has had on her life. The organization is always seeking volunteers and supporters to help further its mission of promoting active and inclusive lifestyles for individuals with disabilities.

The ‘Get in the Game’ fundraiser was a testament to the power of sports to bring people together and inspire them to lead healthier lives. With its focus on inclusivity and empowerment, Adaptive Sports Northwest continues to make a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals in Oregon.
