As the SOWG Chair for Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) on Sol 13, I was thrilled to plan out activities with my team. The tactical planning team has been improving in efficiency, allowing us to include more new scientific observations in today’s plan. Steve Squyres, an expert in geology and former Principal Investigator for the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, led the science team and brought his expertise to the table.
However, we encountered a challenge during planning when we learned that the SAM instrument checkout planned for Sol 14 would need to be split into two Sols. This was due to the need to analyze the results from the first part on Earth before proceeding with the second part. To avoid wasting an extra sol, we had to quickly reorganize our plan and fit in the first part of the checkout on Sol 13. It was a difficult task, but with Steve’s help and guidance, we managed to come up with a new plan that was successful.
The Opportunity mission, still operational above us, provided ongoing support and guidance throughout the process. Despite facing challenges during planning, having individuals like Steve Squyres on our team made a significant difference in putting together a successful plan for Sol 13.
