Almost 100 managers and technology experts are having a conversation about responsible AI

In the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh, experts and policymakers from 15 countries gathered for the AI Connect II Regional Conference. The event, organized by the US Department of State, the Atlantic Council, and the Department of Science and Technology, took place from April 22 to 24 and attracted nearly 100 participants. These included policymakers, senior managers, representatives of technology companies, scholars, and regional organizations who discussed artificial intelligence (AI) and shared their experiences and insights on suitable solutions for the Asia-Pacific region.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy emphasized the importance of international cooperation for sustainable development in AI technology in the Asia-Pacific region. He highlighted the potential benefits of AI for economic and social development while acknowledging concerns related to its socio-economic and ethical implications. Vietnam has developed a National Strategy and Policy that leverages responsible AI development in specific industries like transportation and healthcare.

The Deputy Consul General of the US in Ho Chi Minh City stressed the significance of responsible AI development according to OECD principles. She emphasized that AI Connect II aimed to facilitate participation from low-income countries in global discussions on AI policy. The conference recognized transformative potentials in society and economy but also highlighted ethical considerations and governmental oversight needed to ensure human safety and privacy.

Currently, there are no international principles governing AI development; however, OECD principles serve as a reference point when formulating policies. This platform provided an opportunity for experts to exchange ideas, experiences, solutions to tackle challenges presented by AI technology in Asia Pacific.

In conclusion, it’s clear that international cooperation is crucial for sustainable development in AI technology across regions. While there are numerous benefits associated with this emerging field, it’s important not only to recognize its transformative potential but also address its ethical implications responsibly through collaborative efforts among governments, industry leaders
