Cubs promote Mervis and Wesneski to major leagues

In a recent announcement by beat reporter Tommy Birch, the Cubs have called up Matt Mervis and Hayden Wesneski to the North Side. The news was made public on Tuesday morning. No corresponding moves have been made yet.

Mervis is returning to the Cubs after a short stint last summer that saw him take 97 at-bats. Despite his brief time with the club, Mervis impressed them greatly with his impressive performance at three different levels in 2022, earning him the team’s Minor League Player of the Year award. This season in Iowa, he has continued his strong performance, hitting .288/.402/.606 with five home runs.

There are rumors that Ian Happ may be one of the corresponding moves for Mervis and Wesneski. On Friday, Happ left a game against the Marlins due to hamstring tightness and was replaced by Albert Almora Jr., who went on to hit a home run in his first at-bat as a member of the Cubs. The Marlins went on to win 6-3, splitting the four-game series with Chicago.

Wesneski was recently called up for a day last week and threw four scoreless innings in relief against the Diamondbacks. The Cubs are set to host struggling Astros for a three-game series starting at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
