In a surprising announcement during a Broward School Board meeting in Fort Lauderdale, FL, Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata announced his resignation due to health concerns. Dr. Licata had been leading the sixth-largest school system in the nation and the second-largest in Florida for over 30 years.
Following the announcement, the board voted 8-1 to replace him with Howard Hepburn, a deputy superintendent within the district. This marks the fourth time in just four years that Broward County Public Schools will be searching for a new superintendent.
Dr. Licata expressed gratitude for the community’s faith and trust in him and stated that he believes the district is on the right path for even greater accomplishments. He had been receiving treatment for a medical condition for several months and after discussing with his family and doctors, he decided it was best for him to retire from his role as an educator.
