Business Owners Concerned as Property Crimes on the Rise in DOCO

Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards is raising concerns about the impact of property crimes on local businesses. According to Edwards, some common crimes affecting businesses include burglary and damage to property, and he believes that a policy implemented at the magistrate court level may be contributing to this increase in crime. Under this policy, individuals arrested for misdemeanor offenses such as theft can be reconsidered for release on their own recognizance (OR) if they are unable to make bond and remain in jail for 10 days.

Edwards emphasizes the importance of prevention in order to protect businesses in the area. He stresses that business owners and victims should speak out and inform the court about the impact these crimes have on their interests. Edwards has received complaints about this issue from both sides of Albany, and he is concerned that if the situation continues, businesses may not want to remain in the area.

To address this issue, Edwards suggests that business owners work with law enforcement agencies to implement preventative measures such as increased patrols or improved security systems. He also encourages businesses to report any suspicious activity or incidents immediately so that law enforcement can respond quickly and effectively.
