Court Denies Petition to Release Mamikon Aslanyan from Custody

In a blow to political leader Mamikon Aslanyan, the court has denied his release from custody. Aslanyan was accused of expropriating lands in Vanadzor through fraudulent documents during his time in office. Despite two of his subordinates, a lawyer and the chief architect of the community, being charged and released, Aslanyan remains in prison since December 2021.

The criminal case against Aslanyan was initiated by law enforcement officers after the Vanadzor Council of Elders elections in 2021. Although his political party received the most votes, he was unable to return to his position as head of the community. Aslanyan claims that the case against him is politically motivated and part of a larger political agenda.
