Ford Almussafes waits for electric vehicles with reduced workforce and production of Kuga

Ford Almussafes, located in Valencia, Spain, is experiencing positive developments after years of uncertainty. The plant was awarded the production of a new “multi-energy passenger vehicle,” providing a clear direction for the future and relief for the workforce. This confirmation came after a high-level meeting in Dunton, England, where the immediate future of Ford Almussafes was discussed.

The workforce in Almussafes had been anxious about securing new workloads as the plant was about to stop manufacturing the Kuga model, which had been a flagship product. With several other models discontinued in recent years, the workforce faced challenges including significant staff reductions due to previous employment regulation files (EREs). The assignment of the new model is seen as a way to maintain sufficient workload and potentially avoid further staffing adjustments.

However, the pandemic has also impacted Ford Almussafes, leading to temporary employment regulation files (ERTEs) as the factory struggled with production stoppages, supply chain issues, and market changes. The company’s decision to focus on electric vehicles brought new hope but there are still uncertainties about specific models that will be manufactured in Almussafes. Despite these challenges, Ford Almussafes managed to secure production of electric models over a German factory in 2022. However, lack of clear timelines, investments and production volumes for Almussafes have been criticized by unions.

Despite these challenges and criticisms from unions; The workforce remains hopeful that this new direction will lead to a stable future for the plant and its employees. In conclusion; Securing the production of a new model provides clarity and stability for Ford’s Valencian plant while opening up opportunities for growth in the electric vehicle market.
