NASA’s Voyager 1 probe, located an astonishing 24 billion km from Earth, has overcome malfunctions that threatened to halt its interstellar space exploration mission. The Deep Space Network, a system of ground-based radio antennas, played a crucial role in maintaining communication with the probe. After decoding the signals from Voyager 1, NASA’s team discovered that 3% of the flight data system’s memory had been corrupted due to a malfunctioning chip, rendering the transmitted data unusable. Engineers were able to store the affected code in other areas of the system’s memory by modifying sections of code and updating the code’s new location. On April 18, a radio signal was sent to the probe to direct the code to the new location, with confirmation of successful implementation received on April 20 due to the immense distance of 22.5 light hours from Earth.
