Ukrainian weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, who achieved fourth place in the 85 kg category at the Rio Olympics in 2016, tragically lost his life while defending Ukraine. The Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation announced the news on Monday, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the esteemed sportsman. Pielieshenko’s heart had ceased to beat, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to both weightlifting and his country.

Pielieshenko’s career was halted in 2018 after he tested positive for a masking agent. However, despite this setback, he continued to serve his country by enlisting in the Ukrainian armed forces at the onset of the Russian offensive in February 2022. This brave act was recalled by the Ukrainian Olympic Committee.

The tragic news of Pielieshenko’s passing sent shockwaves through the sports community, with many expressing their condolences and paying tribute to his legacy.
