Amidst a severe drought, Barcelona is facing water scarcity issues that have left residents struggling to meet their daily needs. In response, authorities in the city are planning to install a floating desalination plant in the Port of Barcelona. This cutting-edge technology will have a capacity of 40,000 m3 of water per day, providing a sustainable solution to the city’s water needs.
The decision to invest in a floating desalination plant was made after it became clear that Europe’s largest desalination plant, Llobregat, could no longer meet the current demands due to the prolonged drought. The government believes that floating desalination plants are a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution compared to transporting water from other sources.
In addition to the plant in Barcelona, there will be 12 mobile desalination plants deployed in the northern Costa Brava region to meet the water supply needs in that area. These plants are expected to produce about 6% of the total water consumption in these regions, equivalent to 14 million m3 of water per year.
The cost of producing water using this new technology is significantly lower than using transport ships. As such, this solution is not only cost-effective but also provides an environmentally friendly alternative for meeting Barcelona’s growing demand for freshwater.
