Establishing a mentally healthy work environment: Helpful tips

Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA Houston) recently received an award, The Bell Seal, which recognizes workplaces that prioritize mental health. This award is a testament to the growing awareness of the importance of mental health in the workplace.

According to MHA Houston President Renae Vania Tomczak, creating a mentally safe space in the workplace starts with setting an example of self-care. By demonstrating the value and understanding that companies hold for their employees’ well-being as human beings, Tomczak emphasizes that this can have a positive impact on employee morale and productivity.

Some of the benefits that help achieve a mentally healthy workplace include providing paid time off, establishing relaxation spaces in the office (such as using a closet as a relaxation room or setting up an aromatherapy station), and implementing Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) that offer free therapy and other resources. These initiatives not only benefit employees but can also be cost-effective for companies.

Tomczak also highlighted the importance of surveying employees about their mental health experiences and using that feedback to develop support systems within the organization. By investing in mental health, companies can see immeasurable returns in employee retention, satisfaction, and overall success.

Mental Health America provides resources on mental health and offers counseling services to help organizations and corporations create a mentally healthy work environment.
