The Artificial Intelligence-Generated Child: Meet Tong Tong

Tong Tong, a humanoid powered by artificial intelligence, was unveiled as the “first little girl” by the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI) last January at the Frontiers of General Artificial Intelligence Technology conference. The virtual prototype demonstrated that Tong Tong replicates the behavior of a three to four-year-old and can continuously improve through learning and interactions with humans. Researchers on the project claimed that Tong Tong displays a level of emotional engagement never seen in other AI models, interpreting, identifying, and communicating emotions like happiness, anger, and sadness.

The model possesses a mind and desires to understand common sense taught by humans, discern right from wrong, express attitudes in various situations, and has the power to shape the future through the TongOS2.AGI operating system and the TONGOL2.0 language learning program. Zhu Shongchun, director of BIGAI, emphasized that creating entities with a wide range of abilities and understanding the real world is crucial for advancing artificial general intelligence. The mentality and value system of Tong Tong are similar to that of a young child, making it an ideal tool for assisting people without company or applications in home automation, healthcare, education
