Discovering the Zoo Technology program at JCC

Jefferson Community College students interested in pursuing a career in the zoo industry can now register for the fall semester or complete prerequisites during the summer. Program Director Dr. Mark Irwin and Keirsten Chiodi recently appeared on 7 News at Noon to discuss the program, which provides students with hands-on experience working with zookeepers, veterinarians, curators, educators, and administrators.

As part of this year’s capstone project, students will provide animal enrichment education and presentations at Zoo New York’s season kickoff on May 4. JCC’s Zoo Technology program offers the necessary training and experience for students to excel in this field. Graduates of the program have found jobs across the country, with some even completing internships in places like Alaska.

The best time to start the Zoo Technology program at JCC is in the fall semester, but prerequisites in Math and English are required beforehand. These prerequisites can be completed during the summer session, with special classes starting on May 28 and early and full-session courses beginning on June 3.
