Maduro-aligned prosecutor attempts to link opposition to scandal

Venezuela’s attorney general, Tarek William Saab, held a press conference on Monday to accuse the opposition of corruption at the state-owned oil company PDVSA. He claimed that leaders of the Primero Justicia (PJ) party, Carlos Ocariz and Julio Borges, as well as two other opposition leaders, Carlos Vecchio and Leopoldo López, were involved in a conspiracy against Maduro by having connections with former Minister of Oil Tareck El Aissami and businessman Samark López, who were both recently arrested.

Diosdado Cabello, the first vice-president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, echoed Saab’s accusations and called for political disqualifications to be accompanied by criminal actions against Venezuelan opponents. He accused the opposition of being involved in the PDVSA-Cripto case and claimed there was a conspiracy against the country.

In response to Saab’s accusations, Julio Borges called him corrupt and a liar. Leopoldo López accused the Venezuelan dictatorship of trying to divert attention by inventing claims. Both opposition leaders emphasized the importance of unity and voting in the upcoming presidential election in Venezuela.
