Potential closure of Pico Rivera Sports Arena due to Whittier Narrows Dam repair work – NBC Los Angeles

The Whittier Narrows Dam requires urgent repairs to prevent critical flooding, which may result in the disappearance of community venues such as the Pico Rivera Sports Arena and other facilities. This announcement was made on Tuesday by city officials.

The closure of these facilities is expected to have a significant negative impact on the city’s economy, resulting in income and job losses. The Pico Rivera Sports Arena, which has been a popular destination since its opening in 1979, hosts concerts, rodeos, and cultural events for the Hispanic community in Los Angeles County.

Pico Boys Baseball League, which has been running for 68 years, would also be affected by the closure of Streamland Park. Pico Rivera Mayor Andrew Lara expressed his concern over this potential loss but emphasized the city’s resilience and strength.

To mitigate the impact of these closures and capitalize on new opportunities for growth and development, the city has introduced a $125 million revitalization program that includes developing new parks, open spaces, and sports facilities. Lara highlighted that the city is working hard to secure funding to ensure that these valuable assets are preserved for future generations.
