Capitol to Honor Mental Health Month this Wednesday

The Department of Health is hosting an event at the Hawaii State Capitol to raise awareness about mental health during “May is Mental Health Month: Day at the Capitol” in Honolulu. This unique event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will feature more than two dozen service providers and community organizations sharing information about advocacy initiatives.

The goal of the event is to promote acceptance of mental health care and combat prejudice that prevents people from seeking treatment for their mental health concerns. Statistics show that mental health issues affect people of all ages, with one in six children, one in five adults, and one in four older adults experiencing a mental health issue at some point in their lives.

Dr. Courtenay Matsu, acting administrator for the DOH Adult Mental Health Division, emphasized the importance of providing responsive, comprehensive, and culturally sensitive mental health support in light of recent disasters and tragedies that have affected many residents. Those seeking emotional crisis support or help with substance use can contact Hawaii CARES 988, a free 24/7 call center staffed by locally trained counselors who are available around-the-clock to provide immediate assistance. Additionally, Aloha United Way 211 offers access to over 4,000 local resources where individuals can find information on various mental health services and support options available throughout the state.
