Rochester Institute of Technology’s Innovative SHED Blends Arts and Tech with $120 Million Investment

The Rochester Institute of Technology has recently opened its doors to a brand new building: the Student Hall for Exploration and Development. This 180,000-square-foot facility is a unique addition to the campus, offering visitors an opportunity to see what’s happening behind the scenes.

Upon entering the $120 million building, visitors will immediately be struck by the layout. The theater is located next to two transparent cubes, one dedicated to theater rehearsals and the other for dance studio practices. The glass walls provide a glimpse into the creative process, allowing passersby to observe the innovative projects taking shape inside.

The building’s interior is just as impressive as its exterior. Garage-style doors open up into workshop areas that are filled with benches and machine tools connected to the ceiling by electrical cords and exhaust hoods. This design promotes collaboration and transparency, making it easy for students to share their ideas and work together on projects.

The Student Hall for Exploration and Development is more than just a building – it’s a hub for experimentation and innovation on campus. With state-of-the-art facilities and a design that encourages creativity and collaboration, this space provides students with everything they need to explore and develop their talents. Whether you’re interested in theater or dance, engineering or robotics, this building has something for everyone on campus.
