Salmonella Bacteria Detected in Specimens of Poisoned Children in Dong Nai

A 14-year-old child in Dong Nai was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital 2 in HCMC after consuming Bang bread that contained Salmonella bacteria. The child experienced symptoms such as fever, diarrhea with green stools, and abdominal pain. After a diagnosis of a bacterial intestinal infection, the child was prescribed antibiotics and supportive medications, resulting in improvements in their symptoms.

Salmonella is a common cause of diarrhea worldwide and can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly. The bacteria enter the body through contaminated food and water, producing toxins that damage the intestines and cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, Salmonella can lead to dehydration, low blood pressure, multi-organ failure, and even death. The bacteria can also enter the bloodstream, causing life-threatening sepsis.

In recent news, over 560 people in Long Khanh City have been poisoned after consuming Bang bread from a local store. While most patients have been discharged from the hospital, several severe cases remain, including a 6-year-old boy on life support at Children’s Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the food poisoning outbreak, and test results from food samples collected at the bakery are expected to provide more information.

Salmonella thrives in hot and humid environments and can be spread through improper food handling practices such as not cleaning meat and poultry properly or consuming raw or undercooked eggs. Eating contaminated vegetables or milk can also result in Salmonella infection. In contrast to Salmonella, Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria was found in three critically ill children in Dong Nai but does not typically cause as severe symptoms as Salmonella.

It is essential for individuals to practice proper hygiene when preparing food by thoroughly washing hands before handling food items and ensuring all meat is cooked thoroughly before consumption. Additionally, it is crucial to consume pasteurized dairy products instead of raw or unpasteurized milk.

Overall, it is important for individuals to be aware of the potential dangers posed by contaminated food products and take necessary precautions when consuming them to prevent illnesses like Salmonellosis.
