Volodymyr Zelensky reiterates the need for additional air defense systems following Russian attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again requested more anti-aircraft defense systems from allies on Saturday, after only 21 out of 34 missiles launched by Russia were shot down, causing significant damage to the energy system in three regions. Zelensky emphasized the need for political decisions and agreements to intercept all missiles and drones fired by Russian forces. He thanked the EU and other partners for their assistance and called for air defense systems and high-quality weapons to ensure success on the front lines.

In response to Russian advances on the Eastern Front, Washington announced the release of $6 billion in military aid to Ukraine, which will increase access to Patriot missiles and drones. Spain also announced that it would be shipping Patriot anti-aircraft missiles in a virtual meeting with over fifty countries. Zelensky stressed the importance of quick action and full implementation of agreements to stabilize the front and move towards Ukraine’s war objectives.

After securing approval for over $60 billion in new US aid, Zelensky was able to discuss the challenging operational and strategic situation with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and allies in the Ramstein format, as revealed in a Telegram message. Despite facing challenges, Zelensky remains hopeful that with continued support and rapid action, Ukraine can achieve its goals in the conflict.
