76% of Italians prefer booking their train tickets online, with seven out of ten choosing this method.

Italians have a strong preference for train travel, with a high rate of adoption of new technologies for booking tickets. According to a recent study conducted by YouGov and commissioned by Trainline, 76% of Italians appreciate train travel, which is higher than the European average of 72%. The analysis reveals that three-quarters of the Italian population have traveled by train multiple times in the past three years, highlighting the significance of trains as a mode of transport in Italy and beyond.

The shift in the rail industry over the past 25 years has been significant, with more Italians now preferring to purchase tickets online compared to traditional methods like buying them at the station or over the phone. Comfort during travel, convenience, and sustainability are the main reasons cited by Italians for choosing trains. Young people aged 18 to 24 show a particular interest in greener travel options, indicating a growing trend towards sustainability in transportation.

When it comes to tourism, Europeans, including Italians, prefer the train for domestic and foreign holidays. In Italy, over half of the population (56%) chooses the train for short holidays and long weekends, surpassing the European average of 46%. The popularity of train travel for foreign holidays is also high among European respondents, with 81% planning to use trains for trips abroad, especially among young people.

Andrea Saviane, Country Manager of Trainline in Italy, remarks on Italy’s leading position in embracing train travel, online ticketing, and sustainability in passenger transport. Trainline’s evolution reflects the changing preferences of Italian passengers, making it one of the most successful technology companies and the most downloaded mobility app in Italy.
