Freiburger Recognized in Business Journal’s Women of Influence Event

Tina Freiburger, the dean of the College of Community Engagement and Professions, has been recognized as one of the winners of the Milwaukee Business Journal’s 2024 Women of Influence award. This prestigious list highlights business and community leaders from southeastern Wisconsin who are dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Milwaukee area.

Prior to her current role, Freiburger served as the dean of the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare since joining UWM in 2007. She established the College of Community Engagement and Professions in 2023, which encompasses three schools: Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, School of Education, and School of Information Studies.

Freiburger’s research primarily focuses on gender and racial disparities within the criminal justice system. She has collaborated with local criminal justice agencies on various studies and program evaluations, including topics such as juvenile offending, mental health identification in youth, police relations with juveniles, probationer and parolee work programs, and disparities in prosecutorial and judicial decision-making.

Her contributions to academia are impressive; she has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, secured significant external grants, and written or edited four books. Freiburger also serves on the editorial boards of academic journals such as Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice, Race and Justice: An International Journal, and Journal of Crime and Justice.

This year marks a milestone for the Women of Influence awards; they received approximately 175 nominations – their highest number yet. The winners will be celebrated in a special section within an upcoming issue
