Coco Gauff within reach of surpassing Aryna Sabalenka for world No. 2 spot at Madrid Open

Gauff, Anisimova, and Collins will kick off their Madrid campaigns against Arantxa Rus, Magda Linette or Elisabetta Cocciaretto respectively. Danielle Collins could be their last-16 opponents.

Naomi Osaka is another player to watch out for in the tournament, as she could be waiting in the last 16 for her opponents.

The American women’s contingent in the Madrid draw is particularly strong, with Gauff, Anisimova, and Collins among them. Gauff has had a solid year so far with a record of 19-6 and is tied for the fifth-most wins on the 2024 season. However, she has struggled in Madrid so far, with a record of just 3-3. Her best performance was making it to the last 16 in 2022. On the other hand, Sabalenka is a two-time champion in Madrid and has defeated world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Ashleigh Barty in past title matches.

Gauff recently reached a career-high world No. 3 ranking after winning the 2023 US Open. Her victory over Sabalenka in the final with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 marked her first Grand Slam singles title.
