Latinas in the US Choose Technology Over Jewelry for Mother’s Day: 40% Prefer Gadgets

A recent study by Morning Consult found that 40% of Latina mothers in the US prefer cell phones or Smart Watches as gifts for Mother’s Day, which is double the preference of the rest of Americans. Electronics, such as phones and smart watches, have surpassed jewelry and clothing as popular gifts for this demographic, with flowers remaining the top gift choice for this group.

Verizon’s report reveals that three out of every four Latino adults communicate with their maternal figure at least once a week, showing a strong bond with their mothers. This closeness is more pronounced among Hispanics compared to Americans in general. The survey conducted by Verizon included national samples of Americans, Latinos in the US, and American Latina mothers and caregivers.

Latina mothers are more likely to put off purchasing new smartphone models, making them a target for Verizon’s promotions and offers during Mother’s Day. They tend to use their phones for taking photos, staying in touch with family, and video calls, highlighting the need for fast data networks. This is particularly important since they tend to rely on their phones heavily for parenting and staying connected with loved ones.

Hispanics in the US also tend to pay more tribute to maternal figures on Mother’s Day compared to Americans in general. In addition to mothers, sisters, grandmothers, and aunts are also often recognized on this day. The importance of technology in connecting mothers with their loved ones is highlighted by Verizon’s vice president of Local and Segment Marketing, Robyn Parks who emphasizes the need for families to choose technology that is most important to them. Phone companies like Verizon are capitalizing on this significance by promoting discounts on new smartphone models like the iPhone 15 and Galaxy S24 + during Mother’s Day celebrations within the Latin community.
