Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup Golden Ball Trophy, Stolen, to Go Up for Auction

The iconic Golden Ball trophy that legendary Argentine soccer player Diego Maradona won at the 1986 FIFA World Cup is set to be sold at an auction in June. The late football star’s prized possession will go up for bids at Aguttes auction house in France on June 6th, with an estimated price of “millions” of dollars.

Diego Maradona, who tragically passed away at the age of 60 in 2020, is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time. Alongside legends like Pelé, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo, Maradona is celebrated for his incredible skill and talent on the field. His most remarkable achievement came in 1986 when he led Argentina to their second World Cup victory and was awarded the Golden Ball for the most outstanding player.

Despite being stolen, Aguttes was able to authenticate the Golden Ball after its recovery. This upcoming auction will mark a historic moment as it will be the first FIFA World Cup Golden Ball ever to be sold at auction. The French newspaper L’Equipe reported that Maradona’s iconic trophy had been stolen but reemerged among numerous lots in an auction room.
