New law in the UK allows for the deportation of illegal migrants to Rwanda

The controversial bill to deport illegal migrants from the UK to Rwanda has finally become law after receiving Royal Assent on April 25th. This was announced by Lord Speaker John McFall in the upper house of the British Parliament. The bill was approved by the British Parliament on April 22nd, and earlier, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had stated that the first deportation flights would take place in 10-12 weeks.

In November last year, the UK Supreme Court declared illegal the government’s plan to deport illegal migrants seeking asylum to Rwanda due to concerns about asylum requests not being properly considered and Rwanda not being a safe country for deportation. However, an agreement was reached in April 2022 for the expulsion of migrants from the UK to Rwanda, providing for multimillion-dollar subsidies to be paid to the host country by the UK. Despite this, courts blocked its implementation until now.
