93-year-old man stays strong with the help of his habits

John Starbrook, an 80-year-old fitness enthusiast, has been an ambassador for Age UK since the age of 53. With a dedication to exercise and a healthy lifestyle, he has participated in 52 marathons and achieved impressive records.

Starbrook believes that turning 50 doesn’t mean one is old and encourages a healthy lifestyle. He advises older people to start exercising by jogging 1 to 2 km and visiting the gym at least once a week but not to overdo it. He also believes that swimming is a great way to maintain joint mobility and improve heart health.

For nearly 80 years, Starbrook was an outstanding swimmer, which he honed during his time in the military medical force. To celebrate his birthday, he swam 1 mile across Corryvreckan Bay, between two Scottish islands. He still maintains a habit of swimming short distances three times a week, combined with playing water polo.

Experts say that jogging can help improve the musculoskeletal system and joints as well as benefit the heart. Studies show that running at moderate pace can reduce the risk of death from various diseases. Starbrook attributes his athletic spirit and good health to genetics along with regular exercise and a balanced diet. Despite facing health challenges such as arthritis and irregular heartbeat, he chooses to focus on positivity and finds ways to improve his health through reasonable methods.

Starbrook’s dedication to physical fitness and inspiring others to stay active showcases the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as one ages.
