Bill Hopkins Examines the Ethical Implications of Artificial Intelligence during the Emerging Topics in Health Care Law Conference

At the 25th annual Emerging Issues in Healthcare Law Conference (EMI) held in New Orleans, hosted by the American Bar Association Health Law Section, Spencer Fane attorney Bill Hopkins presented on AI and Legal Ethics: Considerations for Health Care Attorneys. As a sponsor of the event, the firm was represented by Hopkins and Jason Lacey from IMA Financial Group.

During his session, Hopkins focused on the legal ethics issues faced by health care attorneys as artificial intelligence continues to grow in use. The group discussed how generative artificial intelligence is being used in legal tasks and document preparation, as well as the evolving rules and guidelines that may limit such use. They also examined specific ethics concepts such as technology competence, maintaining confidentiality, and discharging supervisory obligations.

The EMI conference covered a range of topics beyond Hopkins’ presentation, including DOJ enforcement, emerging therapies and alternative substances in healthcare, the Physician Self-Referral Law, the mental health crisis, and private equity. Attendees had opportunities to network with other professionals in their field and explore New Orleans during the event.

As Office Managing Partner for the Austin office at Spencer Fane and a member of its DEI Committee, Hopkins plays an important role in protecting healthcare providers and companies from potential pitfalls within the industry. He serves as an advocate for his clients in administrative law, regulatory defense, transactional work, compliance, and litigation.
