Wooten’s journey began when she was born in rural Alabama and became the first in her family to attend college, graduating with a degree in biology from Spelman College and earning a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She joined San Diego County in 2001 and became its public health officer in 2007. Her work has had a profound impact on both San Diego County and beyond.

The Beverlee A. Meyers Award honors late Beverlee A. Myers’ 25-year career with CDPH and recognizes individuals like Wooten who have made significant contributions to public health in California.
