AI technology boosts maritime safety with HMM’s enhanced capabilities

In an effort to improve safety management throughout its fleet, HMM Co., South Korea’s top sea carrier, has recently announced the implementation of an advanced AI image analysis solution called ‘Deep Eyes’. Developed by GlobeAI, a startup founded by professors from Chung-Ang University, Deep Eyes uses AI image analysis integrated into CCTV systems to detect emergencies like fires, smoke, safety gear non-compliance, and falls. Once an emergency is detected, the technology will alert management to take necessary action.

Despite the immense size of very large ships, which can be comparable to 3 to 4 soccer fields, they usually only house 23 to 25 crew members. Previously, shipping companies relied on standard CCTV systems to monitor both the inside and outside of these vessels. However, the lack of notification features in existing systems presented challenges for effective safety management.

With the adoption of Deep Eyes, HMM hopes to improve response times to safety incidents on board and prevent secondary accidents. The technology will initially be fitted on a 24,000 TEU class container ship, the largest in the world, in the coming month. It will cover 15 crucial areas on the ship, such as the engine room and deck. Following an evaluation of its performance, HMM intends to explore expanding the use of Deep Eyes across its fleet.
