In 2024, Heritage Auctions will be selling a rare find at their online auction platform: a Q1 desktop microcomputer discovered by cleaners at Kingston University in London. This unique find is reminiscent of discovering hidden treasures, like stumbling upon a vintage vehicle in a barn or discovering lost artifacts.
The Q1 microcomputer is considered one of the world’s first complete microcomputers with its integrated screen, keyboard, and capabilities. Unlike other systems at the time, the Q1 utilized an Intel 8008 processor, which set it apart from its competition. However, despite its innovative design, the Q1 was not a commercial success and had very limited distribution.
The units available for auction include the original Q1 microcomputer from 1972, a Q1 Lite model from 1976, and a printer designed to work with the Q1 Lite. These items have been stored away for decades but remain in relatively good condition, showing signs of wear and discoloration. They have not been tested and are being sold in an “as is” condition.
Tech enthusiasts will have the chance to own a piece of computer history as the Q1 collection is set for online bidding leading up to a live auction on May 24, 2024. This rare find is sure to be highly sought after by collectors and historians alike.
