Polo Park Student Places Fourth at State Science Fair

Polo Park Middle School student Colin Sullivan showcased his science fair project at the State Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF). His experiment titled “Explosive Sweets” earned him the fourth-place award in the chemistry category. Along with Henry Honeycutt, another eighth-grade student from Polo Park Middle School, Sullivan had the chance to compete in this prestigious event.

The SSEF is organized by the Florida Foundation for Future Scientists, a nonprofit that aims to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields. The fair took place from April 2 through April 4 this year, bringing together students from all over Florida to showcase their scientific and engineering prowess.

To qualify for the SSEF, students must follow specific protocols when designing, conducting, and documenting their experiments. They must also present their findings to judges at their school level. Winners at the school level then move on to compete at the Palm Beach Regional Science and Engineering Fair, where regional winners represent their schools and Palm Beach County at the SSEF.

Sullivan was grateful for the well-organized SSEF and the kindness of everyone involved. He enjoyed interacting with other students and learning about their projects. He encouraged future participants to take part in this exciting opportunity as it can lead to positive outcomes.
