Computer Science and Psychology Student at Northeastern University Dies During Third Year

Griffin Loranger, a third-year student at Northeastern University’s Boston campus who hailed from Maine, passed away on April 15 at the age of 21 as confirmed by school officials and an online obituary. During his time at Northeastern, Loranger was working towards a combined degree in computer science and cognitive psychology, engaging in research projects and global opportunities.

In a statement issued to students on the Boston campus, Dean of Khoury College of Computer Sciences Elizabeth Mynatt expressed the community’s deep sorrow over Loranger’s passing. She noted that he will be dearly missed for his contributions to the College of Science and his love for research. Loranger had a keen interest in history which he explored through a Dialogue of Civilizations program in London.

Apart from his academic pursuits, Loranger held an IT Projects Internship at Sappi, where he demonstrated his technical skills and computing talents. He was also actively involved in various extracurricular activities such as working as a camera operator for Division I sporting events with Northeastern’s Athletic Department, being a member of the NUTV video production club and enjoying playing mahjong with fellow students.

Friends who posted on the online obituary site remembered Loranger as a vibrant and humorous individual who brought joy and laughter to those around him, especially during his involvement with NUTV. The university is offering confidential counseling services to Northeastern students and staff who may be struggling to cope with the loss of Loranger through University Health and Counseling Services, the Center for Spirituality, Dialogue, and Service,
