The intricate relationship between health equity and hospital infections

A recent study has shed light on the relationship between health equity and the risk of hospital-associated infections. The research, conducted by epidemiologist Tamia M. Dixon, MPH, at ASRT, analyzed data from 14 healthcare facilities in nine regions of Louisiana collected in 2022 by the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network.

The findings of the study were presented at the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America Spring Conference in Houston and suggest that factors related to health equity affect the incidence of central line-associated bloodstream infections and MRSA. By analyzing data from both urban and rural settings, researchers have identified opportunities to implement targeted interventions to improve infection rates in these facilities.

In an interview about the study, Dixon explained that understanding incidence rates associated with certain infections is crucial for improving health equity and reducing the risk of hospital-associated infections. “By better understanding how these factors affect infection rates, we can develop targeted interventions to address these disparities,” she said.

The study highlights the importance of addressing health equity in healthcare facilities to reduce the risk of hospital-associated infections. Through a better understanding of this complex relationship, healthcare providers can work towards creating a more equitable healthcare system for all patients.
