Fortescue chooses KBR’s ammonia technology for energy project in Norway

Engineering company KBR has entered into a contract to provide its green ammonia technology for the Holmaneset green energy project in Norway. The 675 metric tonnes per day grassroots green ammonia plant will be developed by Australia-based Fortescue, which aims to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries through the use of renewable hydropower.

Jay Ibrahim, President of KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions, expressed his excitement about working with Fortescua on the project and offering their zero-carbon green ammonia technology. The company aims to play a significant role in the development of the green energy value chain and decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries, aligning with Fortescua’s ESG objectives.

In early 2024, Fortescua awarded Tecnimont, a business unit of Italy’s Maire, the FEED work for the plant. Tecnimont is also expected to submit an EPC proposal for the plant’s realization as part of the agreement. In 2023, the Holmaneset project achieved significant milestones, including a grant of €203.7 million from the European Union (EU) for the green ammonia plant and securing renewable power for the project through a long-term PPA with Statkraft, a renewable energy supplier. This progress reflects Fortescua’s commitment to advancing sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions in the region.
