Japan has achieved a remarkable feat by successfully landing a spacecraft on the moon. The Slim moon lander, part of the Japanese Space Administration (Jaxa), recently reawakened after a two-week lunar night, and Jaxa confirmed the lander’s awakening by sharing a picture taken by Slim of the Moon’s crater. However, the lander has faced challenges due to hitting the Moon’s surface at an incorrect angle, causing its solar panels to not face the right direction. Additionally, the lander is not designed to endure the extreme cold temperatures of the Moon at night, which can drop to 130 degrees below zero.
Despite these challenges, Japan has become the fifth country to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon, joining previous successful lunar landings achieved by the United States, Russia (at the time the Soviet Union), China, and India. This accomplishment adds Japan to an exclusive list of nations that have accomplished this feat.
