The United States to Oppose Israeli Operation in Rafah Without Addressing Humanitarian Issues in Israel-Hamas Conflict

The USA has made it clear that it will not support any Israeli operation in Rafah unless it addresses the humanitarian concerns of the region. Rafah serves as a refuge for over 1.4 million Gazans who have been displaced due to the war. The EU has also expressed concern, stating that they have not seen a credible plan from Israel to resolve these issues.

A spokesperson for the State Department emphasized that any operation that does not take into account humanitarian concerns will not be supported by the US. However, specific measures were not detailed on how Israel should protect the civilian population during such an operation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed his intention to launch a military campaign in Rafah, regardless of whether or not there is a truce agreement with Hamas.

Hamas is currently studying a truce proposal in Cairo, which includes a ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages in Gaza. The international community warns that any offensive in Rafah would only worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where people are at risk of famine and lack basic services.
