The Health Signals Your Feet Are Sending

April marks National Foot Awareness Month, a time to emphasize the importance of taking care of your feet and how they can reveal important information about your overall health. According to Joy Rowland, DPM, a podiatrist at Cleveland Clinic, your feet are not just tools for walking- they can also provide valuable insight into various medical conditions.

Different diseases can manifest in the feet, ranging from heart disease and kidney disease to lymphedema and vascular disease. Even dermatological issues such as psoriasis can show up in the form of foot problems. Dr. Rowland highlighted that the appearance of your feet can also indicate poor circulation or diabetes. Sometimes, people may be surprised to discover that the pain or discomfort they’re experiencing in their feet is linked to a different medical condition, like nerve damage from a back injury. In such cases, additional tests may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

It’s not only the feet that can offer clues; the toenails too can provide valuable information. Thickened, crumbly or brittle toenails may indicate conditions like psoriasis, fungal nail infections or nail dystrophy. Nail dystrophy is caused by repetitive injury to the toenail and isn’t always caused by nail fungus.

Dr. Rowland advised that some people might put up with foot pain or discomfort for years before seeking medical attention but she stressed that it’s crucial not to delay a visit to a podiatrist because early intervention can impact treatment options available. Monitoring foot health is key to preventing complications and ensuring overall well-being. So this month take some time to focus on your feet and remember that they’re more than just what you stand on- they’re a window into your overall health!
