Funeral scheduled for World War II veteran previously listed as missing, set for Monday

A funeral will be held on Monday to honor the memory of Manuel John Pimentel, a World War II veteran from Massachusetts who was previously reported missing. Pimentel enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1939 and tragically lost his life in action on September 24, 1942, during the battle of Guadalcanal.

Pimentel’s bravery and sacrifice were recognized by Missing Marines, an independent research project that shared details of his crossfire incident with a Japanese military unit that resulted in his death. Despite efforts to locate his remains in post-war expeditions in 1947 and 1949, his body remained missing. However, recent excavations in Medford have uncovered his remains, and he will now be laid to rest with full military honors at the Cambridge Cemetery.

The funeral service will take place at Saint Joseph’s Church at 11 am followed by a funeral procession to the cemetery in Cambridge. Flags have been lowered to half-staff on the day of the funeral as a tribute to Pimentel’s service and sacrifice. This final tribute honors Pimentel’s memory and service to his country.
