India’s Economy in the Next Quarter Century: Opportunities and Challenges

The 21st Century India Center at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy is hosting an event titled “India’s Economy in the Next Quarter Century: Opportunities and Challenges” on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 2 PM to 6:30 PM. The event will take place in the Malamud Conference Room at the Institute of the Americas and is open to individuals aged 18 and older. Admission is free for all attendees.

In recent years, India has made significant strides in its development journey, becoming the world’s most populous country, the fifth-largest economy globally, and one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Despite these achievements, India still faces fundamental challenges that must be addressed to ensure sustainable growth.

The event organized by the 21st Century India Center aims to bring together leading economists to discuss current research insights and explore how future academic work can address the most pressing economic issues that India will encounter in the next 25 years. The keynote speech will be delivered by Michael Kremer, a University Professor at the University of Chicago, and co-recipient of the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences. Additionally, there will be a special lecture by Karthik Muralidharan from UC San Diego, author of “Accelerating India’s Development.”

The agenda for this public event includes a panel discussion featuring experts from various fields such as economics, finance, and technology. Afterward, there will be a break before hearing Kremer’s keynote speech followed by Muralidharan’s special lecture. The event concludes with a reception where attendees can network with like-minded individuals who share an interest in Indian economics.
