Increased mental health initiatives benefiting farmers

Dr. Florence Becot, an expert in agricultural safety and health from Penn State University, is urging lawmakers to reauthorize the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network created by the 2018 Farm Bill. Becot emphasizes the importance of continued support for farmers’ mental health, noting that stress in agriculture is a persistent issue that requires ongoing resources.

Becot has conducted research on changes in mental health resources for farmers across several states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. She has observed a significant increase in organizations providing resources and programs for mental health support over the years. This growing awareness and accessibility have led to a decrease in stigma surrounding mental health struggles among farmers, making it more comfortable for them to discuss their struggles openly.

Senator Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow’s farm bill framework includes increased appropriations for the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network, reflecting the importance of prioritizing mental health resources for farmers. However, concerns have been raised about potential setbacks in mental health support for farmers if the Republican outline in the House does not mention the program. Overall, Becot believes that continued support and resources are essential to ensure that farmers’ mental well-being remains a priority.
