EU prevails over Italy: Pnrr has no connection to abortion

The Pnrr decree contains measures that are linked to the governance structure of the Pnrr and are effectively linked to the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan. However, there are other aspects that have no connection with the Pnrr, such as the law on abortion. This was stated by Veerle Nuyts, the spokesperson for the European Commission for Economic Affairs, during a daily press briefing in response to ongoing debate on abortion in Italy.

The position expressed by the European official has sparked controversy in Italy over the government’s use of European funds. Riccardo Magi, Secretary of +Europa, criticized the government’s use of PNRR funds to introduce pro-life associations into clinics, stating that it is a political move that offends women, freedoms, dignity and is an improper use of funds.

Similarly, parliamentarians from the 5 Star Movement of Social Affairs commissions criticized the government for including a rule allowing pro-life associations into counseling centers in the Pnrr decree. They stated that this was an ideological propaganda move that restricts women’s rights and freedom.

In conclusion, they highlighted that instead of using European funds for retrograde propaganda over women’s rights, the government could have focused on resolving issues affecting Italian consultants by adopting their bill presented to Parliament which proposes providing resources and qualified personnel to ensure compliance with abortion law.
