Electric Car Price War Unleashed by Automobile Giants at Beijing Fair

The Chinese electric car market has experienced significant growth in recent years, accounting for 69% of global sales in December 2023 according to Rystad Energy. As a result, Chinese automotive giants are engaged in a fierce price war at the start of the Auto China motor show in Beijing as they seek to attract new customers.

Chinese consumers, particularly those with high net worth, have high expectations for smart features in electric vehicles. Local manufacturers excel at providing these features and have been expanding their presence in international markets. At the fair, companies like BYD will showcase their latest innovations alongside traditional automotive giants such as CATL and Toyota.

Despite concerns about the impact on local competitors raised by the expansion of electric car production in China, Chinese companies attribute their success to innovation and supply chain efficiency rather than government subsidies. Companies like Li Auto and Tesla have announced price cuts for their models amidst a growing price war in the Chinese market. Amidst these developments, Elon Musk has referred to Chinese manufacturers as “the most competitive car companies in the world.” With 129 electric car brands in China alone but only 20 capturing at least 1% of the local market share, there is still much competition in this rapidly growing market.
