Respiratory Therapy Technology Program Now Available at COTC

The growing demand for respiratory therapists in Licking County and beyond has prompted Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) to launch a new two-year associate degree program in respiratory therapy technology at their Newark campus. The program is currently awaiting accreditation confirmation, with classes set to begin this fall. The application deadline is June 15. COTC also has branch campuses in Coshocton, Mount Vernon, and Pataskala.

Respiratory therapists play a vital role in assisting individuals with lung diseases or disorders recover or rehabilitate. They work in various medical settings such as emergency departments, intensive care units, and rehabilitation centers. Tyler Richards, the program director, highlighted the increasing number of retiring therapists compared to new entrants into the workforce. There are currently numerous open positions in hospitals and more are expected as facilities expand.

The program will involve classroom learning and clinical placements. Graduates will be eligible to pursue the registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Upon completion of the program, graduates can expect to earn a median wage of $65,760 annually according to Ohio Labor Market information. Students have the opportunity to apply for a limited permit after one year, allowing them to gain experience in the field and establish connections while supporting themselves financially.

To apply for admission to the program, students must submit a free application for admission and a respiratory therapy technology program application on go.cotc.edu/respiratory or contact COTC’s admissions office at cotcadmissions@mail.cotc
