NRAO Backs International Symposium Advancing Science in the Caribbean

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) recently took part in an important international symposium held in the Caribbean. The symposium aimed to bring together scientists from different parts of the world to discuss the future of science and technology in the region. It also focused on showcasing the talents of local scientists as well as those in the Caribbean diaspora.

Professor Shirin Haque from the University of the West Indies (UWI) played a key role in organizing the event. Haque, who completed her Ph.D. at UWI and the University of Virginia under an IDB fellowship, has a long-standing partnership with NRAO. UWI and NRAO have worked together on programs like the Radio Astronomy Data Imaging and Analysis Lab (RADIAL) program and the NINE program, which provide access and training in radio astronomy to underrepresented individuals. Several UWI undergraduates have participated in the RADIAL program, with three joining this year.

One of the key goals of the symposium was to establish a central hub for science, including radio astronomy, in the Caribbean. By fostering collaboration between scholars in the region and around the globe,
