Two families generously donate one million dollars each to UWL science programs to boost faculty enrichment

Two families, one with a long history with UWL and the other a recent graduate, are contributing almost three million dollars to UW-La Crosse to support the expansion of science programs at the college. Interim chancellor Betsy Morgan announced both gifts on Thursday.

Former UWL faculty member Ron Rada and his wife Jane have donated $1.3 million to provide funding for the University’s River Studies Center. Rada, who has a long history with UWL, expressed his hopes that the Center can use the funding to further enhance its reputation by expanding its interdisciplinary freshwater knowledge and education to extend its influence beyond just academia.

The larger donation of $1.5 million comes from Mike and Kathi McGinley, who are setting up an endowed professorship at UWL. Mike, an alumnus of the campus from 1982, expressed his hope that the gift will contribute to valuable research programs. The McGinleys have supported students, scholarships, and fellowships and now want to support faculty to ultimately benefit the students. Both donations are expected to take effect at UWL a year from now.
