The issue of an independent Palestinian state to be considered by the UN General Assembly

In May 10, a resolution may be submitted to the UN General Assembly recognizing Palestine as an equal member of the Security Council. This is not a new idea, as a similar resolution was recently blocked by the United States in the UN Security Council. However, it is important to note that while decisions made by the General Assembly are advisory and do not automatically result in the creation of a Palestinian state, it is expected that an overwhelming majority of UN members will vote in support of the resolution.

If this resolution is adopted, Israel’s representative to the UN Gilad Erdan has suggested that the United States should consider stopping funding to the international organization, similar to what was done with UNESCO when it granted the Palestinian Authority full membership status.

It is important to remember that in 1988, the Palestinian National Council declared the independence of Palestine. While 140 UN members supported the decision and many states recognized it shortly after, it did not lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
