Nora Cole’s “The World According to Micki Grant” is set to make its Off-Broadway debut at WP Theater. This biomusical delves into the life and work of multifaceted artist Micki Grant, who was the first Black woman to write the book, music, and lyrics for a Broadway musical.
Grant’s “Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope” made history as the first solo work by a Black woman on Broadway. Her talent as a songwriter, poet, lyricist, and writer earned her several accolades including Tony nominations for the musical’s book and score and a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album.
The show will feature a talented cast including Matelyn Alicia, April Armstrong, Patrice Benn, and Shawn Bowers. Alicia and Armstrong will portray different aspects of Grant’s life while Bowers embodies the male figures from her works. The creative team behind the production includes music director Tom Spahn, choreographer Lakai Worrell, and various designers contributing to the visual and technical aspects of the show.
Tickets for “The World According to Micki Grant” can be purchased through WP Theater’s website. The show will run from May 31 to June 29 with an official opening date of June 6.
